In the final of the men’s U100kg at Brasilia’s Grand Slam Kentaro Iida (WRL 15) had the measure of Rafael Buzacarini (BRA-WRL-22) as the Japanese youngster impressed his coach and legendary champion Inoue Kosei. The 21-year-old, who has often been dubbed the ‘new Inoue’, has a devastating uchi-mata just like this mentor but it was his morote-seoi-nage which earned his second Grand Slam gold medal with 64 seconds remaining on the clock. The U100kg weight category at the Grand Prix in Zagreb proposed a particularly high level of top class judoka, but surprisingly the top three athletes of the category, Elkhan Mammadov (AZE), Elmar Gasimov (AZE) and Varlam Liparteliani (GEO) were eliminated during the preliminary rounds opening the road to less well ranked athletes to reach the final, which opposed the explosive Jorge Fonseca (POR) and Cirjenics Miklos of Hungary.
