World medallist Megumi Tachimoto retires
World championship silver medalist Megumi Tachimoto is retiring from competition, her sponsor announced on Tuesday. Tachimoto, who competed in the open weight class early in her career before moving to the +78kg category, said she would stay involved in judo “in some form.” Read more

Gviniashvili defeats Khalmurzaev in super final U90kg
Two top level athletes were in the final of the Grand Prix: Beka Gviniashvili and Khusen Khalmurzaev. Almost a year ago both won the Grand Prix in Samsun in different weight categories; now, both competitors stepped onto the tatami at U90kg. Their last encounter was in 2012 at European Junior Championships when the Georgian won the contest. As it happened, the 2017 edition of their matchup left the judo fans as winner, as well. Ukraine’s Iryna Kindzerska captures first IJF Tour victory
Budapest Grand Prix bronze medallist Iryna Kindzerska (UKR) defeated five-time world medallist Tachimoto Megumi (JPN) to make sure that her country’s only medal in Germany was of the golden variety. World number 24 Tachimoto, 28, was making her return from a lengthy injury lay-off and that showed as the 25-year-old Ukrainian, who was fifth at the London 2012 Olympics, drove over the accomplished Japanese heavyweight in golden score with a tani-otoshi for a match-winning waza-ari score and her first Grand Prix gold prize. Kanae Yamabe claims last Olympic spot in Japanese womens team
Kanae Yamabe downed rival Megumi Tachimoto for her third national judo championship title on Sunday to clinch a spot in this summer’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics. In the pair’s third meeting in the final at the national championships in as many years, and this year serving as the final qualifier for Rio in the +78kg category, holder Tachimoto injured her left knee with under a minute remaining. Hisayoshi Harasawa defeats Ryu Shichinohe at all Japan Judo Championships
Some big surprises at the All Japan Championships this weekend in Fukuoka. In the men’s U90kg Daiki Nishiyama defeated Mashu Baker. Baker is the World Championships bronze medallist of Astana in 2015. Baker is ranked 4th in the World Ranking, Nishiyama 11th, so a decision has to be made by the technical staff of the All Japan Judo Federation. Read more
