The forthcoming European Open in Belgrade will be a highlight this year to celebrate the successes of Serbian judo. Serbian judo is geared up and to illustrate that it will be the first time in the history that Belgrade will host a European Open, whereas the previous editions since 2011 had a European Cup status. The Sport Hall Aleksandar Nikolic will be hosting the approximate 250 participants of more than 25 nations.

Within the two match days there will be enough attention to celebrate both the European title by Aleksandar Kukolj and the World title captured by Nemanja Majdov at 1 September.

The amazing steps that Serbia achieved this year are clearly noticed in the world of judo. Nemanja Majdov became the second youngest ever World Champion in this category following up great champions as Gwak Donghan (KOR), triple World Champion Ilias Iliadis (GRE) and Asley Gonzalez (CUB).

Majdov, just 21, will compete with Aleksandar Kukolj for an Olympic spot in 2020 in Tokyo. Kukolj, an expert on the ground finished fifth at the World Championships but won the European title at 22 April in Warsaw as first Serbian athlete. Kukolj is still the number one of the World Ranking list, followed by Majdov. The U90kg category is the only division with two leaders of one nation. Earlier this year Russian duo Alan Khubetsov and Khasan Khalmurzaev led their category U81kg.
