Son of Dennis Stewart, bronze medallist at the Olympic Games in Seoul. Max won national junior titles and various international Junior tournaments. He won bronze at the senior European Cup in Saarbrucken in 2016. He took a bronze medal at the Grand Prix in Zagreb and gold at the Grand Prix in Qingdao in 2016. At the European Open in Glasgow he took the gold in 2016.

What a year it has been so far for Axel Clerget of France. At the age of 30 he is still one of the favourites for the European Championships gold medal in Warsaw U90kg. The Frenchman would normally get heavy competition of Alexandre Iddir, but so far Clerget is the man. Varlam Liparteliani left this category but gave us back Beka Gviniashvili. British judo talents want to continue positive vibe at Paris Grand Slam

Last year Great Britain won two bronze medals at the Grand Slam in Paris through Sally Conway, who later took Olympic bronze in Rio, and Natalie Powell. These were some of the most valuable medals for Great Britain last season as it was the first occasion in several years that any judoka from Great Britain won a medal in Paris. Read more

British men shine as Max Stewart claims first IJF Grand Prix

British Max Stewart turned his number one seed status into gold for Great Britain on Sunday with the best performance of his blossoming career. Stewart, 23, defeated Ulaanbaatar Grand Prix silver medallist Gantulga Altanbagana from Mongolia and rushed to embrace with his coach and dad Dennis Stewart (GBR) who won bronze at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Record low participation at Grand Prix Qingdao hosting 155 athletes

Since the Olympic Games in Rio Qingdao is the fourth city to host an IJF World Tour event. The Qingdao Grand Prix 2016 draw took place on the eve of the competition at the Diamond Hall within the Qingdao Guoxin Stadium. This event will host 15 nations and 155 judoka (87 men, 68 women) over the next three days. The previous low record was in 2009 at the first edition with 158 athletes.
