Zooming in to the top athletes for the Doha Worlds, we can see new stars rising since this year. The World Masters were a good grade for some of the athletes as a good bet. Despite the absence of double Olympic Champion Shohei Ono, the class U73kg will be a pleasure for the judo fan to follow. World Masters winner Daniel Cargnin is among the top favs for the gold but more and more people will look at Lasha Shavdatuashvili as major contender as well as the always attractive Soichi Hashimoto. So far Mongolian World Champion Tsogtbaatar Tsend-Ochir hasn’t recovered from his stunning result in Tashkent, grabbing the World title U73kg. Cargnin is definitely a medal candidate and Brazil’s men’s coach Sebastian Pereira took a world medal in 1999 in Birmingham in this weight category. Pereira he is in the coaching block and knows what it takes to win a medal. Daniel Cargnin who was the 2017 Junior World Champion continued to get grip on his peers in U73kgs since he won Olympic bronze in Tokyo in U66kg but hasn’t stopped impressing the judo fans with outstanding performances.

Is the venue worthy of the championship?

The Doha World Championships may seem a weird spot for Judo World Championships but Doha is a sports hub for the world for years. Since the major Championships in any sport take place in Qatar since the mid zeros, every athlete will know the renowned facilities of the city. With the organisation of the FIFA World Cup the city evolved even more to a sports capital with fantastic stadiums, sports facilities at any kind of world level and also for judo the city is well known.

In 2004 Doha organized the Asian Junior Championships but it was just a small event for what was coming in 2006, the Asian Games where judo was a part of the top sports. Although Qatar doesn’t have a familiar judo history, the central spot in the desert is now a welcome event organizer where experience, money, great facilities and top level organization skills are for grab.

The Athletes will be hosted in the Ezdan hotel close to the boulevard (the Corniche) and tourist places and since as a preparation for the FIFA World Cup the Metro lines that connects the city to the sports facilities.

At the Previous World Championships Japan claimed 5 titles but Brazil and host Uzbekistan followed with two world titles. This time judo pundits wouldn’t be surprised if the Brazilian again mingle with a stunning medal hunt. Their experience is still an asset in the women’s division but the men could become a surprise in Doha.
