Japan's Takajo defeats Mongolian ace Davaadorj

Tokyo Grand Slam winner defeated top seed DAVAADORJ Tumurkhuleg (MGL) to win the -66kg title on the opening day of the Judo Grand Prix, Ulaanbaatar 2014. Word number seven DAVAADORJ and world number nine TAKAJO - who has fallen slightly out of favour since the emergence of Chelyabinsk-bound TAKAICHI Kengo (JPN) – were well matched and there was little to separate them until the Japanese fighter threw with drop seoi-nage with 20 seconds left to steal a late win.
In the first semi-final home hero DAVAADORJ Tumurkhuleg (MGL) had the better of Dusseldorf Grand Prix silver medallist Rene SCHNEIDER (GER) as the former received one shido while his opponent received two shido penalties. In the second semi-final TAKAJO downed the ever-improving Patrick GAGNE (CAN) by scoring ippon following his initial waza-ari score a yuko which was registered by GAGNE.
The first bronze medal was won by Junior World silver medallist TATEYAMA Sho (JPN) who defeated GAGNE on shido penalties. GAGNE was penalised for passivity, a false attack and not taking a grip as TATEYAMA played it safe and, despite receiving two shido penalties, never looked in danger during the five minute contest. The second bronze medal contest was destined to stay in Mongolia as DOVDON Altansukh (MGL) won the first Grand Prix medal of his career at the expense of world number 55 SCHNEIDER. DOVDON was penalised with a shido for passivity and, after the German blocked a tomoe-nage attempt, the contest was all square with 30 seconds left after SCHNEIDER received a penalty for passivity. A further 75 seconds of golden score was required to separate the rivals when the German received a shido for passivity.
