In 2018, the season will start in Tunisia in January (19-21) and the World Championships (individual and teams) will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan (September 20-27) while more than 20 events will be held during an important season. 2018 will actually see the beginning of the Olympic qualification for Tokyo 2020.

In 2020, Judo will go back to Japan for the Olympic Games with the newly approved mixed team event and our sport will already be present in Japan in 2019 as the world championships will be held in Tokyo.

IJF President Marius Vizer: “My main goal was to develop our sport, show the world the beauty and values of Judo and transform Judo as a modern leading sport on the international scene.”

A few days only after the IJF World Masters  in St. Petersburg, the IJF is already in preparation of the new World Judo Tour. Vizer, signed a few important new sponsor contracts recently and also the contracts of the judogi and tatami suppliers were prolonged and built out. Vizer:  “Our future targets are to increase the number of broadcasters and the popularity of judo, increase the media value for sponsors and attract more sponsorship, as well as consolidate the IJF and World Judo Tour brand, creating a universal judo culture.”

Although the calendar is full of international events, there’s more price money for the athletes since this year with five times more money for the medallists at the World Championships and a fixed bonus for each World Ranking leader of 50,000 USD. For now four weeks of recovery and preparation for the first World Tour event of a new Grand Prix in Tunis starts its engines.
