Laura Vargas Koch faces heavy competition in Olympic qualification

Germany’s sole judo medallist at the Rio 2016 Olympics, Vargas Koch, 28, has one medal on the IJF World Judo Tour since the greatest day of her career in Brazil. Former world silver medallist Vargas Koch won bronze at the Grand Prix of The Hague in 2017 but has failed to medal in her nine other IJF outings since South America’s first Olympic Games. Read more

Beslan Mudranov steps up to U66kg category

At the Grand Prix of Marrekech a few judo super stars are back on the mat. One of them is Beslan Mudranov. But he will have to give the utmost to gather enough points for qualification for the Olympic Games. Mudranov has been moved from the U60kg category to the U66kg category for Marrakech which will be his debut at the heavier weight. Federation of Montenegro in trouble athletes still welcome

The Montenegro Judo Federation does not get any support anymore from either the government, nor the international federations. The IJF suspended the federation with immediate effect which was just a result of the sloppy internal affairs in Montenegro. The Judo Federation was the only federation that didn’t fulfil its duties to report to the government. Read more

Automne Pavia split between family and judo love

Automne Pavia won Olympic bronze at the Olympic Games in London and finished seventh at Rio 2016, returned to competition in 2018 after a two-year absence during which time she started a family. In Marrakech she might be able to collect new points for the Olympic Qualification, but the love for her daughter cannot be compared to the judo business. In July Canada will host the Grand Prix of Montreal. Antoine Valois-Fortier has a number of goals. Getting shape for Montreal and the biggest challenge is to qualify for the Olympic Games. The Olympic bronze medallist of 2012 in London returned to action in February at the Düsseldorf Grand Slam after a back injury kept him out since May 2018 but didn’t survive the first round.
