Theme for World Judo Day is STRONGER TOGETHER

The new theme for World Judo Day in 2020 is ’STRONGER TOGETHER’ which is a pledge to spread our values when the world needs it most. After the success of the 2019 edition, which saw more than 6,000 trees planted across the five continents, the IJF is once again active to carry out its values. The occasion will be organised and marked on 28th October, all over the world, to celebrate the values of judo. Read more

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a combination of different martial arts practiced all over the world. The main concept behind the game is to combine different fighting techniques that work well in various disciplines, combining them into a complete combat system. That includes techniques borrowed from Judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, sambo, and wrestling, to mention a few. As such, several MMA fighters today started practicing other disciplines before transitioning to this combat system. Read more

Olympian Salima Souakri new Secretary of State in Algeria

Salima Souakri became the new Secretary of State to the Minister of Youth and Sports, responsible for elite sport, within the Algerian government. Souakri participated in the Olympic Games four times and having won the prestigious Paris Tournament and ten African Champion titles. Souakri was also the first woman from Algeria and the Arab community to take part in the Olympic tournament. Read more

European Champion Katrin Beinroth passes away (38)

Again another relatively young judoka passed away. 38-year old former European Champion Katrin Beinroth died at 23 June. The heavyweight passed away in her sleep. She was married since August 2013 and used the name Katrin Simper. Read more

Sugoi Uriarte announced as IJF coach

Sugoi Uriarte was appointed as IJF coach in June. "I have spent a long time working to integrate everyone into the same project. From now I will take the role of IJF Coach for all of my athletes, whatever flag they represent. I am delighted to belong to this IJF Team and that we are able to help each other to develop. British medal optimism in 2021 based on history

Great Britain’s record at Olympic Games level over the years has been equally as sketchy. To date they have won only eighteen Olympic medals in Judo since it was added to the Summer games schedule way back in 1964. Neil Adams is still the most successful British judoka after winning silver in the men’s U71 kg category in 1980 in Moscow, Russia, and again in the men’s U78 kg category in 1984 in Los Angeles, USA.
