European Judo Championships 2021 to Lisbon
Portugal is going to host in Lisbon the European Judo Championships in 2021 and the tournament will “honour one of the best sportswomen in the world”, the judoka Telma Monteiro, the Portuguese Federation President said.
Jorge Fernandes said that the Portuguese Judo Federation (FPJ) was awarded the European Championships in 2021, confirmed by the EJU. Lisbon is to host the European competition for the second time since 2008.
Portugal applied in April 2018 and the competition is scheduled between 29 April and 2 May 2021 at the Altice Arena.
Fernandes also said the budget is “little more than €1 million and much less than €2 million”.
The European judo competition will follow the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, so the preparation is already underway, and it is an opportunity to “present athletes in all categories and the most well prepared.”
The idea is to honour Telma Monteiro, bronze medallist in Rio2016, five-time European champion and 12 medals at European Championships and four-time world runner-up.
This year's European Championships are integrated into the European Games held in Minsk held at 25-27 June. In 2020 the European Championships take place in Prague.
