Funa Tonaki completes Grand Slam treble

Tonaki Funa of Japan defeated former Paris Grand Slam silver medallist Kang Yujeong (KOR) by ippon in the U48kg final to keep her Tokyo 2020 ambitions alive. World number three and Former world champion Tonaki clinched her third Grand Slam title at the expense of the world number 15 who was dispatched with a sumi-gaeshi for ippon.
The Japanese has a prolific medal record on the IJF World Judo Tour but has an 0-3 record against Daria Bilodid (UKR), the current and youngest world judo champion of all time, while her colleague Kondo Ami (JPN) is yet to tangle with the Ukrainian wonderkid.
In the first semi-final Tonaki held down Tel Aviv Grand Prix bronze medallist Nathalia Brigida (BRA) for ippon while in the second semi-final Kang saw off Junior World Championships bronze medallist Laura Martinez Abelenda (ESP) by a waza-ari score.
The first bronze medal contest was won by Cancun Grand Prix silver medallist Catarina Costa (POR) who took Martinez Abelenda down with a delightful piece of opportunistic ashi-waza for ippon.
The second bronze medal was won by Brigida who submitted Ekaterinburg Grand Slam bronze medallist Katharina Menz (GER) with a juji-gatame for ippon after three and a half minutes of golden score.

Former world champion Tonaki Funa of Japan defeated Marrakech Grand Prix winner Julia Figueroa (ESP) with a professional performance as she scored twice without reply to increase her advantage over the chasing pack in Japan. World number two Tonaki illustrated once again that she is her country’s best judoka in judo’s lightest weight category and is now within touching distance of selection for her first Olympic Games. Ukraine super champion Daria Bilodid is the youngest world judo champion of all time who successfully defended her world title as she won a thrilling rematch of the 2018 final against former world champion Funa Tonaki on home soil. Bilodid couldn’t be believe the achievement in the Nippon Budokan. “I can’t believe it, I know once, but two? For now I have too many emotions. Fighting Funa Tonaki is very hard, now it was in Tokyo. No major surprises so far in the preliminaries for the women’s division U48kg at the World Championships in Japan. The favourites progressed to the quarter finals and a final between Funa Tonaki and defending World Champion Daria Bilodid is still possible. For that final Bilodid will first have to defeat 2013 World Champion Urantsetseg Munkhbat of Mongolia. Read more
Former world champion Tonaki Funa of Japan was pushed all the way by Antalya Grand Prix winner Distria Krasniqi (KOS) in a U48kg thriller in the first final of the Grand Prix in Budapest. World Championships contender Tonaki opened the scoring with a waza-ari before being caught with a uchi-mata for a waza-ari score on the edge of the area. In golden score, Tonaki had the edge as she pinned down her rival from Kosovo for 10 seconds and U48kg gold. Read more
Japanese lightweight Tonaki Funa struck gold at home in the first final at the Osaka Grand Slam 2018. Former world champion Munkhbat Urantsetseg (MGL) showed off her ne-waza prowess in the earlier rounds but made a mistake on the ground in the final when she miscalculated a turnover and World Championships silver medallist Tonaki took full advantage as she applied a mune-gatame for 20 seconds to take gold in less than a minute.
