One of the biggest surprises at the Grand Slam in Paris was Moldovan judoka Denis Vieru. He won gold in Paris defeated Vazha Margvelashvili (GEO) in style with a beautiful tai-otoshi. Denis Vieru was interviewed one day later to get to know him better.

Vieru: “I started Judo in my childhood, when I was 7 years old. I became passionate about this sport and was fascinated by the different fighting styles of Judoka from around the world. I watched them and was impressed by what they did on the tatami.”

What is your favourite Throw?

My favourite throw is Tai Otoshi, which is spectacular and very, very effective.

What do you prefer in Newaza?

In newaza, my favourite techniques are armlocks. They have brought me many victories and I will continue to use them in the future.

Do you have any hidden talents?

Hy hobby is chess. I’ve liked playing since I was a kid because it helped me to think positively and to improve my intellectual and tactical skills. It’s actually similar to judo since you need to have patience, to focus on small details which can eventually bring victory.

What do you like to eat most?

I’m not too fussy when it comes to food, but I like salads, especially warm salads and also meat...any kind of meat.

Are your nervous for a match?

I handle my emotions by having a positive attitude. The possibility of victory gives me more motivation.

Do you have any advice for young kids?

For young judoka I would advise patience and to not lose heart. Just move forwards all the time and keep training harder and harder.

Who is your favourite Judoka?

I don’t have a favourite Judoka now, but when I was younger I had three. Cho Min-Ho the Korean, Rishod Sobirov from Uzbekistan and the Russian Beslan Mudranov, they impressed me because they fought with courage and intelligence and they had good results.

Why Judo?

Judo is a sport for strong and courageous people where respect and friendship are the most important values.
