Countdown for inaugural Judo Grand Prix Tel Aviv

The IJF World Judo Tour 2019 will launch in just over a week with a brand new event. The new season will open in Israel with the inaugural Tel Aviv Grand Prix from Thursday 24 to Saturday 26 January.

Over 400 judoka from 53 countries will compete at the Shlomo Arena which is expected to be sold out on all three days.

Home star and European champion Sagi Muki will be one of the best supported judoka in Israel’s capital and will be an early favourite for gold.

Among the top athletes will be Tal Flicker, Baruch Shmailov U66kg, Peter Paltchik fighting for gold U100kg and back in the scene Or Sasson +100kg.

In the women’s division strong contenders with Rishony and Minsker U48kg, Primo and Temelkova U52kg. Nelson Levy U57kg and many more talents from the country where judo is the number one individual sport.

Sagi Muki expressed his sympathy for his Iranian competitor, who was forced to lose his final two bouts so that the two would not compete against one another. An exciting tournament U81kg at the World Championships with Sagi Muki as the new World Champion. In the final he defeated belgian prodigy Matthias Casse another time. Muki and Casse know each-other inside out but again Muki was able to take this match and captured the first world title for his country. A super exciting final block is expected at the fourth day of the World Championships where World champion and world number one Saeid Mollaei of Iran powered into the last four with four wins from four contests including a round four success over Olympic champion Khasan Khalmurzaev (RUS). There were some doubts if Mollaei could fight. He can always fight anyone, but is he allowed to, that is still the big question as in the semi final he will face Belgian prodigy Matthias Casse.
