In the final U90kg of the Grand Slam in Baku, Samsun Grand Prix silver medallist Guillaume Elmont (NED) proved to be too experienced and cunning for his teammate and Dusseldorf Grand Prix silver medallist Noel Van 't End (NED). Elmont, who won world gold in 2005, is still a teak-tough and highly-capable judoka almost a decade on from his success in Egypt. Van 't End, tried to find a way to break through the resistance of his vastly more experienced compatriot but the wily vet won through. Elmont had two shido penalties to his name for passivity and going out of the area while his opponent earned three penalties for going out of the area and the last two for passivity.

In the first semi-final Elmont dispatched Tbilisi Grand Prix silver medallist Walter Facente (ITA) by ippon while his teammate Van 't End defeated Prague European Open winner Murat Gasiev (RUS) after teasing an ippon seoi-nage attack only to launch with a ko-uchi-gake for ippon.

The first bronze medal was won by GASIEV as his colleague Samsun Grand Prix bronze medallist Magomed MAGOMEDOV (RUS) could not compete due to injury. The second bronze medal was captured by Junior world champion Beka GVINIASHVILI (GEO) who showed lethal precision against FACENTE. Teenage powerhouse GVINIASHVILI, 18, powered to victory by ippon from a determined uchi-mata after his opponent was penalised with a shido for going out of the area.
