Three golds for Brazil at Visually Impaired judo Grand Prix

At the Impaired judo Grand Prix in Walsall, Willians Araujo, Alana Maldonado and Lucia Araujo took three golds as Brazil tops the medal table in Walsall, England.

Brazil topped the medal table at the visually impaired Grand Prix, held in Walsall, England, between 4 and 5 June, thanks to the three golds won by Willians Araujo, Lucia Araujo and Alana Maldonado.

World No.1 Willians Araujo defeated home favourite Jack Hodgson and Venezuela’s William Montero to claim the title in the men’s -100kg. Great Britain’s two-time Paralympic medallist Samuel Ingram topped the podium in the -90kg.

France’s World No.2 Cyril Jonard took the -81kg title, whilst Russia’s reigning European champions Vitalii Koriakin (-60kg) and Abdula Kuramagomedov (-100kg) won their respective categories.

Romania’s Alexandru Bologa (-60kg) and Germany’s Nikolai Kornhass (-73kg) also claimed gold in Walsall.

In the women’s events, Brazil’s Lucia Araujo won gold in the -57kg, whilst teammate Alana Maldonado emerged as the victor in the -70kg.

Germany’s London 2012 gold medallist Carmen Brussig proved to be the best in the -48kg, whilst France’s Sandrine Martinet claimed the -52kg title. South Korea’s Song Lee Jin and Belarus’ Arina Kachan won the -63kg and the +70kg, respectively.

One of the best days for Uzbekistan judo was the opening day of the Paralympic Games in Rio. With two gold medals Uzbekistan stole the show. Never in the Paralympic history Uzbekistan won a gold medal, actually just one medal in London. Today Uzbekistan claimed three medals and won two Paralympic titles.
