Pavia and Papinashvili collecting miles in Cuba

Another attractive destination for Grand Prix, it was for the first time in Cuba ever. After European Open in Madrid, IJF Tour continues with another Olympic qualification tournament, here in Havana. Team of Cuba selected 56 competitors in total, which is maximum for every organiser.
Pavia won another -57kg tournament, in final she beat Filzmoser by two waza-ari. This was her sixth won match against Austrian judoka, which celebrated only once against Automne Pavia, it was in 2010. Two surprises at the tournament as Marti Malloy (USA) and Myriam Roper of Germany did not succeed to reach the podium at the first Grand Prix in Cuba.
Georgian Papinashvili added 300 miles for him on IJF WRL as he was the winner in division U60kg. Fantastic ko-soto-gake movement against Takabatake (BRA) with quick tranisition in osae-komi for Amiran Papinashvili. Papinashvili needed only 55sec for gold medal in Cuba. In bronze medal fight Ashley McKenzie of Great Britain dominated against Arshanski (ISR).
In the category U66kg Mikhail Pulyaev defeated Sugoi Uriarte in Havana. His second big victory after the Grand Slam of Paris.
Cuban athletes won four medals, two gold, one silver and one bronze. However all of this medals were won in the womens competition.

The first IJF World Tour tournament is the Grand Prix of Havana. Despite the kick-off at the African Open in Casablanca, most of the top athlete prepare to be in Cuba like in June 2014. Then held in June the circumstances were excellent for the athletes to chill after the tournament. This year the international calendar is totally different. Read more
World silver medallist Erika Miranda (BRA) had to settle for silver in Havana as she could not compete due to injury to hand the gold medal to double Olympic silver medallist Yanet Bermoy (CUB). The Brazilian star was unable to take her place in the -52kg final after aggravating a shoulder injury. Read more
At the second day of the Olympic Games in London An Kum-Ae of DPR Korea won the gold medal. An lost the final in 2008 in the category U52kg, Her opponent though, Yanet Bermoy from Cuba also lost last edition’s Olympic final, in 2008 she lost U48 against Alina Dumitru of Romania. An is the second ever legendary judoka for DPR Korea. In 1996 Sun Hui Kye defeated Ryoko Tani in Atlanta. Read more
What a surprises today in the men’s U66kg and women’s U52kg. In one his first match Musa Mogushkov of Russia, one of the major favourites in the men division lost his first match dramatically against Tarlan Karimov of Azerbaijan. Sugoi Uriarte of Spain and Karimov reached the quarterfinal and Uriarte defeated the talent. He will meet with Miklos Ungvari in the semi final. The Hungarian defeated two very strong fighters in Rok Draksic (SLO) and Pawel Zagrodnik (POL). This year Ungvari defeated Uriarte at the European Championships. Before that win Uriarte won twice. The U66kg category in Tokyo is hard to predict, but when it comes to the finallists, it’s doable as some athletes are way above the rest. There are two Japanese in this category and the gold could easily go to either one. Abe is the more accomplished internationally but the older Maruyama has beaten Abe in both domestic and international competitions. Read more
