Former Junior World Championships gold medallist Wakaba Tomita of Japan earned her first senior IJF gold medal at the expense of Openweight World Championships bronze medallist Nihel Cheikh Rouhou (TUN). The 22-year-old Japanese was making her first appearance on the IJF circuit since finishing fifth at the 2015 Tokyo Grand Slam. Read more

Three times in a row France and Japan are fighting in the World Junior women's teams final, and for the third time in a row the Japanese women take the World title. In the Junior World Team Championships women’s final Japan showed their superiority as they unleashed their best young judoka to defeat France 4-1 in the final. Tomizawa Kana (JPN) bested Gwenaelle Patin (FRA) in the opening contest by a yuko but bronze medallist Sarah Harachi (FRA) restored level terms against world champion Funakubo Haruka (JPN). Tomita Wakaba takes heavyweight gold in Abu Dhabi

Japanese Tomita Wakaba became Junior world champion for Japan after a perfect day in Abu Dhabi. All four opponents were powerless to stop Junior Asian Championships silver medallist Tomito who ended every contest by ippon. The 18-year-old bested three-time Junior European Cup winner Camila Nogueira of Brazil in the +78kg final by an uchi-mata on the edge of the area with 48 seconds left. Read more
