He took a bronze medal at the Grand Slam in Düsseldorf in 2018 and bronze at the GP Zagreb. He captured bronze at the Grand Prix in Tel Aviv in 2019. Hidayat Heydarov of Azerbaijan won his home Grand Slam for the first time as he beat Tel Aviv Grand Prix bronze medallist Tohar Butbul (ISR) in a nervy U73kg final. The former European Championships gold medallist and World bronze medallist won his first IJF World Judo Tour medal in ideal fashion as he used the home advantage and encouragement of the crowd to fuel his charge to victory in Baku. Vadzim Shoka (BLR) won his first IJF final as he beat Italian youngster Giovanni Esposito with a late flurry in the last 30 seconds of their U73kg gold medal contest. Both Esposito brothers were good today but it was this time Esposito who reached the podium. World number 47 Shoka made a slow start as Esposito looked composed and set about controlling his opponent with his superior kumi-kata and ashi-waza. Read more

Shohei Ono back to his best in Düsseldorf

Olympic champion Ono Shohei of Japan was back to his brilliant best as he won all six contests in Germany to return to the medal podium for the first time since Rio 2016. Ono was matched against silver medallist Rustam Orujov (AZE) in a rematch of the Olympic final and the outcome was the same as the Japanese superstar was back with vengeance after a short-lived comeback at the Tokyo Grand Slam in December.
