IJF World Judo Tour newcomer Yan Wang of China arrived on the scene last year at the Tokyo Grand Slam. Wang lost in Japan to Junior World Championships winner Sone Akira (JPN) but responded by taking a highly-impressive silver medal at the Paris Grand Slam this year which saw her avenge her defeat to Japanese teenager Sone. Wang took bronze at the Hohhot Grand Prix in May 2018. She won gold at the 2019 European Open in Prague. He captured the bronze medal at the Grand Prix in Budapest in 2019.

Wakaba Tomita snatches gold in top heavyweight field

Former Junior World Championships gold medallist Wakaba Tomita of Japan earned her first senior IJF gold medal at the expense of Openweight World Championships bronze medallist Nihel Cheikh Rouhou (TUN). The 22-year-old Japanese was making her first appearance on the IJF circuit since finishing fifth at the 2015 Tokyo Grand Slam. Read more

Teenager Akira Sone secures first IJF World Judo Tour title

Youngster Akira Sone ruled the women’s heavyweight category at the Grand Prix Hohhot with a comprehensive win over Paris Grand Slam winner Kim Minjeong (KOR). All Japan Openweight Championships winner Sone , 17, caught Kim with an ouchi-gari for a waza-ari score with one minute left on the clock and added a second by osaekomi to earn Japan’s seventh gold medal at the first qualifier for their home Olympics. Kim Min-Jeong tightens her grip of world number one position

The final of the Grand Slam in Paris for women +78 opposed world number one and top seed Kim Minjeong (KOR) and the new Chinese heavyweight Wang Yan (CHN).
