Judo World Champion 2015 Takanori Nagase won Olympic bronze in Rio 2016. Nagase won the Universiade in Kazan (Student World Championships) in 2013. He won the All Japan Championships in 2015 and the IJF Masters in Rabat U81kg. In 2013, 2014 and 2016 he won the Grand Slam in Tokyo. He claimed a bronze medal at the Grand Slam in Osaka in 2018. He took silver at the Grand Slam of Ekaterinburg in 2019 and gold at the Grand Prix in Montreal and Zagreb. Nagase won the Grand Slam in Brasilia in 2019.

Former world champion Nagase Takanori of Japan won his second Grand Prix title in July as he followed up on his Montreal win by going unbeaten in Zagreb. Olympic bronze medallist Nagase bested London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Antoine Valois-Fortier (CAN) by ippon in the final in a first-time meeting between two of the leading judoka in one of judo’s most fascinating weight categories. Israel’s Sagi Muki bested former world champion Nagase Takanori of Japan in the U81kg final in Ekaterinburg to win his third Grand Slam gold medal. Paris Grand Slam silver medallist Muki waited until the closing seconds before launching with seven seconds left with a shoulder throw for a waza-ari and world number 153 Nagase had to settle for silver in his first outing for 2019. First Grand Slam title for Takeshi Sasaki

Sasaki Takeshi of Japan was the last man standing for Japan in the U81kg category as he beat Budapest Grand Prix silver medallist Kohara Kenya (JPN) in the final. The Japanese pair cancelled each other out in regulation time but Sasaki took control in golden score and held down his colleague for 20 seconds and ippon to blow Japan’s battle for Tokyo 2020 wide open in a category which has not always served them well on the biggest stages in the sport.
