Judo World Champion 2015 Takanori Nagase won Olympic bronze in Rio 2016. Nagase won the Universiade in Kazan (Student World Championships) in 2013. He won the All Japan Championships in 2015 and the IJF Masters in Rabat U81kg. In 2013, 2014 and 2016 he won the Grand Slam in Tokyo. He claimed a bronze medal at the Grand Slam in Osaka in 2018. He took silver at the Grand Slam of Ekaterinburg in 2019 and gold at the Grand Prix in Montreal and Zagreb. Nagase won the Grand Slam in Brasilia in 2019.

Shohei Ono leads top team of Japan in Düsseldorf

Olympic and reigning world champion Ono Shohei (U73kg) leads an 11-strong Japanese team in action at the second Grand Slam of the season this weekend in Düsseldorf. Former world champion Nagase Takanori defeated former world silver medallist Fujiwara Sotaro (JPN) to win his sixth Grand Slam gold medal and to take charge of the race for Tokyo 2020. As expected, world number 15 Nagase and world number 12 Fujiwara were well-matched and two minutes of added time was required to produce a winner as the latter was penalised for passivity for the third time to settle the first men’s final on day two. Takanori Nagase claims second Grand Prix title in a month

Former world champion Nagase Takanori of Japan won his second Grand Prix title in July as he followed up on his Montreal win by going unbeaten in Zagreb. Olympic bronze medallist Nagase bested London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Antoine Valois-Fortier (CAN) by ippon in the final in a first-time meeting between two of the leading judoka in one of judo’s most fascinating weight categories.
