Akil Gjakova delivers gold for Kosovo in Budapest
Akil Gjakova captured Kosovo’s third gold medal in Budapest at the Grand Prix but the first of the golden variety after a faultless display on day two. 2018 Paris winner Gjakova threw 20-year-old Orenburg European Cup winner Georgii Elbakiev (RUS) with a sumptuous sasae-tsurikomi-ashi for his second score to seal gold while Elbakiev will not be too disappointed having announced his arrival on the international stage with his first IJF World Judo Tour medal. Hidayat Heydarov of Azerbaijan won his home Grand Slam for the first time as he beat Tel Aviv Grand Prix bronze medallist Tohar Butbul (ISR) in a nervy U73kg final. The former European Championships gold medallist and World bronze medallist won his first IJF World Judo Tour medal in ideal fashion as he used the home advantage and encouragement of the crowd to fuel his charge to victory in Baku. Lukas Reiter is Austria's golden man U73kg in Oberwart
Austria celebrated gold at the European Open for men in Oberwart on Saturday with Lukas Reiter who was the best judoka in the weight category with the most participants. Reiter was the best of 58 athletes U73kg and took the gold after he won his final with a ippon for Ko-Uchi maki-komi against Telman Valiyev of Azerbaijan. Read more

Smiles for Smagulov as the Kazakh has the beating of Uzbek rivals
Zhansay Smagulov of Kazkhstan ruled the U73kg category for Uzbekistan’s neighbours with a workman like performance. The 25-year-old Asian Championships bronze medallist picked up his second Grand Prix gold medal and first since 2015 by defeating world number 11 Giyosjon Boboev (UZB) in the final. Read more
