Slovenian judoka Klara Apotekar opened 2019 with a victory at the Grand Prix in Tel Aviv. She became European Junior champion in 2017 in Maribor. She won silver at the 2015 World Junior Championships and she took silver at the Grand Slam in Tyumen in 2016. Apotekar won a European U23 silver medal in 2014. Half-sister of Ana Velensek. She took a bronze medal at the Grand Prix in Tunis in 2018 and bronze at the Grand Slam in Düsseldorf in 2018 and 2019. Grand Prix silver in Zagreb in 2018.

Double Olympic bronze medallist and two-time world champion Mayra Aguiar (BRA) was back on the top of an IJF medal podium for the first time since 2017 as she denied Germany a gold medal on home soil. Slovenian Klara Apotekar defeated Tashkent Grand Prix winner Loriana Kuka of Kosovo in the U78kg final to open her Grand Prix gold medal account. The Slovenian threw Kuka in added time with a sumi-gaeshi for a match-winning waza-ari score. Read more

Shori Hamada gives herself the best birthday gift ever

On her 28th birthday Shori Hamada (JPN) became the new world champion for women U78kg in Baku. Again Japan for gold and a great disappointment for the Dutch Guusje Steenhuis and the Netherlands that lost eight World Championships finals in a row since the last successful title for Verkerk in 2009 in Rotterdam. After a long final of nine minutes Shori Hamada won the world title after three penalties for Guusje Steenhuis. Read more
