Cuban judoka Jose Armenteros won the World Junior title in 2011 in Cape Town. Three years later he was in the World Championships final in Chelyabinsk. He won PanAm Championships titles in 2014 and 2015. He won bronze at the Pan American Games in 2015 and WCup in Minsk. Silver in Düsseldorf in 2016. He took a bronze medal at the European Open in Oberwart in 2016.

Cuban team preparing to get back in line with top judo countries

The Cuban athletes are training in Budapest prior to the upcoming World Championships. A team of 13 Cuban judokas is now on a training base in Budapest to get into top shape to take part in the tournament, which will be held in Budapest from August 30th to September 3rd. Read more

Toma Nikiforov pleases judo fans with massive gold in Vise

Despite the busy weekend with a European event in Lisbon, the Belgian Open in Visé had a good field. Across seven weight categories the French judoka were clearly the strongest. With two gold and eleven medals in total, the French held a 20% stake in the distribution. However, for the Sunday home crowd the victory of Toma Nikiforov was the most appealing. Read more

The men’s event U100kg has a huge number of fighters with medal chances. Not just the top favourites but also former Olympic medallists such as Naidan, reigning Olympic Champion Khaibulaev or the determined European champion Henk Grol. Cuban Olympic team aims for two medals

The Cuban selection was announced but no surprises. The only historic surprise is that there was no one selected in the category U52kg, a category where Cuba won the Olympic title in 2000 and silver in 2012 by Yanet Bermoy. Over the last three Olympic Games Yurisleidys Lupetey qualified for the category U57kg, also this weight division is absent in the Cuban selection. Read more

Loic Pietri back in business at Grand Prix Almaty

At this week’s Grand Prix of Almaty some of the last points are for grab, but it won’t be easy for the 399 participants. The category U81kg is as usual the most competitive with 45 participants and includes the comeback of 2013 World Champion Loic Pietri. The Frenchman may face home boy Aziz Kalkamanuly or dare devil Frank de Wit in his first fight. Many competitors are in that same pool for those last points to secure qualification. Pietri won World silver in Astana last year, so he is still the favourite and nearly almost medals where he starts. Read more
