Rustam Orujov of Azerbaijan won Olympic silver in Rio and became World Championships silver medallist in 2017 in Budapest and 2019 in Tokyo. In 2016 he was European champion, bronze in 2017 and silver in 2019. Rustam won many IJF World Tour events. Orujov was born in Ust-Ilimsk (RUS). He took the gold medal at the Grand Prix in Zagreb in 2017. Rustam claimed bronze at the Grand Slam in Baku in 2019. He took bronze at the IJF World Masters in 2019 in Qingdao.

Preview Finals Day 2 in Qingdao

The second day of the Grand Prix final in Qingdao delivered some surprising finals. In the men’s categories U73 and U81 both finallists have never met before. Rustam Orujov will face Soichi Hashimoto. U81kg Goki Maruyama and Wang Ki-Chun will meet in an interesting Asian final. In the women’s final U63kg it was Busra Katipoglu who surprisingly qualified for the final. China is represented by the experienced Junxia Wang. Read more about the finallists. Read more

In the IJF ranking Georgii Zantaraia is back at his number one position U66kg. He replaces Davaadorj Tumurkhuleg who was number one after Paris. At last weekend’s Grand Slam of Abu Dhabi where Zantaraia finished third, An BaUl of Korea was the winner and the world champion moved up to place 4, from 5. Read more

Hiroyuki Akimoto captures third victory in Paris

In the final of the Grand Slam in Paris U73kg top seeded Rustam Orujov of Azerbaijan qualified, already sure to add some precious points to retain his world number one position on the ranking list. The presence in the final of Japanese Akimoto Hiroyuki was more of a surprise as he was not among the top eight of the category, although he had won the Grand Slam in Paris two times before. Paris Grand Slam disarmed of world champions

The Grand Slam of Paris will have a relatively weak field this weekend, especially in the men's category where non of the fresh World Championships will be at the start. On Friday the draw will be conducted and the athletes can prepare on their journey in the new Bercy. An event to lookout for but apparently not all athletes are keen on fighting in Bercy in October. Tremendous change in IJF World Ranking

In the latest release of the IJF World Ranking list the women haven’t changed many leading positions, but in the men’s category everything looks totally different from now. Yeldos Smetov captured not only the world title at home in Kazakhstan but is now also the new leader of the World Ranking. It’s for the first time since December 2012 that Kazakhstan enjoys an IJF leader. The last one to leave the #1 position was Maxim Rakov. Smetov took over the position of injured Orkhan Safarov (AZE).
