French judoka Walide Khyar won the European title in 2016 in Kazan. He took bronze at the Grand Slam in Paris in 2016. Khyar won the European Junior title in 2015 in Oberwart. He won bronze at the 2015 World Junior Championships in Abu Dhabi. He won bronze in individual and Team Europeans in 2014. He won the European Cup in Malaga U66kg as good practise. He won the Grand Prix in Tunis in 2018. He claimed a bronze medal at the European Open in Warsaw in 2019 and silver at the Grand Prix Tbilisi.

Kyrgyzbayev offers Kazakhstan the alternative

World number 11 Gusman Kyrgyzbayev of Kazakhstan struck Grand Slam gold for the first time in his career as he won the first men’s final at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam. The Kazakh finds himself behind teammate and former world champion Yeldos Smetov on the IJF World Ranking List with the latter holding fourth place. Kyrgyzbayev took top spot with the narrowest of wins over world number 19 Walide Khyar (FRA) by way of a waza-ari score from a ko-soto-gake. Read more

Lukhumi Chkhvimiani snatches gold U60kg taking revenge on Garrigos

Georgia have a new European Judo Champion after Lukhumi Chkhvimiani defeated Spaniard Francisco Garrigos in the men's judo U60kg final at Chizhovka Arena. In the ranking of the first eight athletes four athletes with Georgian names, the original Georgians took two medals, gold and there was bronze for Amiran Papinashvili who bested Dutchman Tornike Tsjkadoea. Georgian Lukhumi Chkhvimiani won his home Grand Prix for the third year in a row as he beat European champion Walide Khyar (FRA) in the U60kg final. Tokyo 2020 contender and Düsseldorf Grand Slam bronze medallist Chkhvimiani showed his superiority on home soil as he beat one-time Grand Prix winner Khyar by rolling the Frenchman over for a waza-ari score which was the only score in the men’s lightest final. A great contest between Nora Gjakova and Olympic Champion Rafaela Silva in Tbilisi’s U57kg final. After the first shift and qualification for the final both won all their matches. Kosovo star Gjakova defeated Dutch woman Sanne Verhagen in the semi final whilst the Brazilian defeated Helene Receveaux for a place in the final in the Georgian capital. Read more
