Mihael Zgank became World Championships silver medallist in 2017 in Budapest. He won bronze medals at European Junior and U23 Championships. Zgank won a bronze medal at the Grand Prix in Tashkent in 2015 and silver at Grand Slam Brasilia in 2019. He won bronze at the Grand Slam in Paris in 2017 and at the GP Düsseldorf. He switched to Turkey as Mikail Ozerler. Ozerler clinched the gold at the Grand Prix in Antalya in 2019. Ozerler captured European Games gold in Minsk.

Mikhail Ozerler gives Turkey European gold

For the first time in 15 years a Turkish man won the European title. Mikhail Ozerler captured the European Games gold medal in the final against his Israelian opponent Li Kochman. What an amazing battle field in the category U90kg where World Champion Nikoloz Sherazadishvili lost too early against Swiss Ciril Grossklaus. It was just one of those surprises. 2017 European Champion Aleksandar Kukolj lost to Mikail Ozerler, the world’s runner up of 2017 who reached the final. Former world silver medallist Mikail Ozerler of Turkey clinched Turkey’s first gold medal at their home Grand Prix in Antalya as he drove past Tbilisi Grand Prix silver medallist Giorgi Papunashvili (GEO) in golden score. World number 47 Ozerler, who was previously known as Mihael Zgank before switching from Slovenia to Turkey last year, won his first medal for his new employers with a devastating harai-goshi for ippon to kickstart his belated qualification bid for Tokyo 2020.
