Alex Garcia Mendoza of Cuba won bronze at the Pan American Games in Toronto as heavyweight. In 2016 he won bronze at the Grand Prix Havana. He won bronze as well at the PanAm Championships in 2015. In Cuba he won the Jose Ramon tournament and various Cuban championships medals. He finished fifth at the Olympic Games in Rio. In 2017 he won a silver medal at the Grand Prix in Cancun. He took a bronze medal at the IJF Masters in St. Petersburg in 2017.

Georgian European champion Guram Tushishvili made it three-for-three for Georgia as his country won the U90kg, U100kg and +100kg titles at the IJF World Masters in St. Petersburg. Baku Grand Slam winner Tushishvili, 22, won his second IJF World Judo Tour gold medal at the expense of 30-year-old world number one David Moura (BRA). Read more

Japanese and Cuban battles for World Open bronze in Marrakech

Cuban team preparing to get back in line with top judo countries

Despite the busy weekend with a European event in Lisbon, the Belgian Open in Visé had a good field. Across seven weight categories the French judoka were clearly the strongest. With two gold and eleven medals in total, the French held a 20% stake in the distribution. However, for the Sunday home crowd the victory of Toma Nikiforov was the most appealing. Read more
