North Korean judoka Kuk Hyon Hong grew to the top 10 in the world U73kg. He won the Grand Prix of Qingdao in 2014 U73kg. He won silver at the World Championships in 2014 in Chelyabinsk against Nakaya and finished 5th in 2015 in Astana. He was Asian champion in 2013.

IJF confirms talks with North Korea about World Juniors 2017

The IJF have confirmed the talks between IJF President Marius Vizer and a bid committee from North Korea to host the 2017 Junior World Judo Championships. President Vizer recently visited Pyongyang in North Korea to discuss the bid from the Asian country with high-ranking government officials such as the Minister of Sport and the National Olympic Committee along with the national judo federation and their hugely-talented team. Mirali Sharipov pleases home crowd

Uzbek Mirali Sharipov won the Tashkent Grand Prix for a second time as he overwhelmed Junior World Championships bronze medallist Nuno Saraiva (POR) in the -73kg final. The 21-year-old Portuguese judoka had no way out from a tate-shiho-gatame and remained pinned to the tatami for 20 seconds by Sharipov. The world number 59 beat the world number 81 inside 45 seconds to send the crowd into raptures – as he did in 2013 - while Saraiva will be content with his day’s work having won his first IJF senior medal. Grand Prix Tashkent hosts record of 355 athletes in Uzbekistan

On Thursday the Grand Prix of Tashkent will start in Uzbekistan, always an interesting Grand Prix to collect some points for the world ranking where the competition is tough but doable. Two World Champions are at the start in Tashkent and the field is stronger than ever. Title defender Amartuvshin Dashdavaa is second seeded and separated from Sharafuddin Lutfillaev who is the highest seed U60kg in a field of 26 judoka. Rishod Sobirov won’t defend his title of last year. The World bronze medallist is absent U66kg at Dimitry Shershan (BLR) is the first seeded. 35 athletes will fight for the gold in this tough category. Read more

Double joy for Japan, world title for Ono

After 90 seconds in the match Ono hit Nakaya with good ashi-waza and combined his way to a waza-ari score. Nakaya was already awarded with a penalty so Ono had a luxury situation. Both fighters picked up another penalty but the world title was safely back in the hands of Ono who lost it in 2014 against Korean Lee Young-Jun. Read more

Four Asian men in the semi finals U73kg

At the third day of the World Championships in Astana again a full Asian Semi final is opposed in the category U73kg. Ono Shohei was the winner of the toughest pool where he defeated World Ranking number two Sagi Muki in the quarter final. Ono’s block was doable but Muki had to survive among Uematsu, Duprat and Van Tichelt. An Chang-rim of Korea also had a huge pool B with Sainjargal whom he defeated in the quarter final. But it wasn’t easy so far for An who overcame Montenegro sensation Nikola Gusic, he bested Olympic Champion (U66kg) Mansur Isaev by penalties. An further defeated triple World medallist Dex Elmont and dangerous German Igor Wandtke. Read more
