Experienced Junxia Yang takes gold in The Hague

Chinese judoka Yang Junxia handed her country their first gold medal in The Hague after the hosts of the upcoming World Judo Masters had earned two silver medals on day one. British veteran Alice Schlesinger was unable to resist the turnover into osaekomi that Yang had used in all four of her previous contests as the world number 61 won her third Grand Prix title and her first outside of Asia. There are two very obvious top contenders in the category U63kg in Budapest and both have won a World title before: Tina Trstenjak of Slovenia and Clarisse Agbegnenou of France. Of the two, Trstenjak has the slight edge. She is the defending Olympic, World, and European Champion and she has won the last four encounters with Agbegnenou. But this time it cannot be the final. Grand Prix Qingdao moves to northern city of Hohhot in 2017

The Grand Prix of Qingdao is set to start for the last time in the harbor city. The Qingdao Grand Prix was first held in 2009 and is one of the longest-running events on the IJF World Judo Tour. Qingdao’s top sports event has been an annual leg of the tour since then but this year marks a farewell as China’s judo showpiece will move next year to Hohhot, the Capital of Inner Mongolia in North China. The field starts with just 68 women but including the two top Chinese heavyweights Ma and Yu. Read more
