Former World #2 U70kg Maria Portela competed at World Championships and Olympic Games. She won the Grand Slam in Ekaterinburg in 2018. She won the Grand Slam in Moscow in 2012, Grand Prix Abu Dhabi in 2012 and PanAm Open. She was PanAm Champion in 2012 and won various continental medals. In 2016 Portela won bronze in Havana U70kg and silver at Grand Prix Baku and silver at the Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi in 2016. She took gold at the IJF Masters in St. Petersburg in 2017 and Tbilisi Grand Prix.

Maria Bernabeu grabs second Spanish gold in Baku

World silver medallist Maria Bernabeu (ESP) returned to the IJF World Judo Tour medal podium in Baku for the first time since her heroics at the sport’s 2015 marquee event in Astana, Kazakhstan. Bernabeu blasted past Havana Grand Prix bronze medallist Maria Portela (BRA) in the final as she surprisingly overpowered the Brazilian in osaekomi for 20 seconds with a sankaku-gatame hold. 398 athletes from 68 nations kick-off for the Grand Prix in Samsun on Friday. Of course a big team from Turkey with 52 athletes will compete and the eyecatchers are the women fighting at Day 1 U48kg where Dilara Lokmanhekim and Ebru Sahin will fight for the top positions. Both are potential Olympic participants for Turkey, but only one can go. They are ranked closely, Lokmanheim at 13, Sahin at 14 in the latest Olympic Ranking.
