Ramin Gurbanov of Azerbaijan took a bronze medal at the Grand Prix in Qingdao in 2015. He also won Grand Prix bronze in Jeju, Abu Dhabi and Baku. Silver in 2011 in Tallinn. Gurbanov won the Universiade in Belgrade (Student World Championships) in 2009. Bronze at African Open in Casablanca in 2016.

Gwak Dong Han (KOR) won Jeju Grand Prix gold for the second year in a row as he bested Baku Grand Slam bronze medallist Mammadali Mehdiyev (AZE) in the -90kg final. The final of the Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi saw Italian Walter Facente and Dutchman Noël Van 't End. After almost two minutes of observation, Facente was the first one to score with an outstanding left handed tai-otoshi for waza-ari and with just 17 seconds remaining scored ippon with another superb technique (ko-uchi-gari).
