Cuban judoka Idalys Ortiz became Olympic Champion in 2012 in London and won silver in 2016 in Rio. Ortiz had already won Olympic bronze in 2008 in Beijing. She was World Champion in 2013 and 2014. In 2019 and 2018 she won silver and in 2015 she won World bronze in Astana. She won various Panam Championships and Games and captured the gold medal at the Grand Slam in Paris and Düsseldorf in 2019. She won the Grand Prix in Budapest and Hohhot in 2019 and her first Grand Slam gold in Osaka in 2018.

Kayra Sayit takes her chances and gold at GP Budapest

In her first appearance for Turkey Kayra Sayit won the gold medal at the Grand Prix of Budapest after beating African Championships winner Nihel Cheikh Rouhou of Tunisia in the women’s heavyweight final. Cheikh Rouhou was penalised with a shido for dropping down and that was the difference in the last women’s fight of the competition. The victory felt also a bit uncomfortable for the newly married Sayit who got the benefit of the doubt by the referee. Sayit apologised to Cheikh Rouhou at the podium. Read more

Kanae Yamabe takes gold medal at Paris Grand Slam

Asian judoka have a reputation taking gold medals. Chinese and most over Japanese women prevail in the historic medal tables. The Paris Grand Slam didn't differ from those statistics. Tokyo Grand Slam runner-up Yamabe Kanae (JPN) was triumphant against home judoka Emilie Andeol of France in the +78kg final. Read more

Megumi Tachimoto captures Japan's 11th gold medal

Three-time World Championships bronze medallist Tachimoto Megumi bested Moscow Grand Slam silver medallist Yamabe Kanae (JPN) to win Japan’s 11th and last gold medal medal of the competition. Both judoka were penalised after 30 seconds with shido penalties for passivity before Tachimoto was at fault moments later for the same offence. Yamabe was unable to capitalise and, with the contest failing to ignite, was penalised with two shido penalties which was one more than Tachimoto after the five minutes elapsed. Read more
