Cuban judoka Idalys Ortiz became Olympic Champion in 2012 in London and won silver in 2016 in Rio. Ortiz had already won Olympic bronze in 2008 in Beijing. She was World Champion in 2013 and 2014. In 2019 and 2018 she won silver and in 2015 she won World bronze in Astana. She won various Panam Championships and Games and captured the gold medal at the Grand Slam in Paris and Düsseldorf in 2019. She won the Grand Prix in Budapest and Hohhot in 2019 and her first Grand Slam gold in Osaka in 2018.

IJF awards 14 World leaders 50,000 USD each

The International Judo Federation has awarded all 14 judoka who ended 2016 as the world number ones with an extra $50,000 each in prize money. Seven male judoka and seven female judoka received the cash windfall as 10 countries were represented at the top of the final world ranking list for 2016. Read more

Three European athletes, two Asian and two Pan American athletes are leading the last World Ranking of the year, what was called the IJF Prestige ranking. Mongolia is the most dominant nation in the world ranking for women with two leading positions. Former Mongolian, now Kazakh judoka Otgontsetseg Galbadrakh won the most prize money, $15,500 of which 20% went to her coach. Read more

The World Ranking has changed quite a bit due to the reduced points gained at the 2015 and 2014 World Championships. Athletes such as Yeldos Smetov and Yuri Alvear who benefit of their Olympic performances in combination with the performances at World Championships, lost points again, but will obviously still be in the top of their divisions. Emilie Andeol realises the double for France at last Olympic Judo day

Emilie Andeol is the first European women’s heavyweight to take the Olympic title. The French surprise defeated 2012 Olympic champion Idalys Ortiz in the golden score of the final. Ortiz could have been the first Cuban judoka ever to win the title twice, but it was the French who captured a premier being the first European since the first official women’s tournament in 1992 in Barcelona. In 1988 in Korea women’s judo was a demonstration sport where Dutch Angelique Seriese won the title. Read more
