Austrian middleweight Kathrin Unterwurzacher returned to form in Tashkent with a sixth Grand Prix gold medal to go some way to making amends for her early exit at August’s World Championships. The world number three and European Championships bronze medallist won all three of her contests on Saturday without giving away a single score to register her country’s first medal in the competition. Sebastian Seidl had a good comeback on home soil and won the European Cup in Saarbrucken. The 26-year policeman from Bayern recently returned from a March injury, but won all five of his matches today to win the first European Cup of his career. Read more

Brazil is the big winner after the first day of fighting at the Pan American Open in Santiago de Chile. The Brazilian team captured five out of the seven titles. Exceptions on the Brazilian domination were Gimena Laffeuillade of Argentina who took the title U57kg and Antoine Bouchard of Canada who defeated Brazilian Charles Chibana in an expected final. The final for women U63kg in Abu Dhabi confronted Clarisse Agbegnenou (FRA) and Kathrin Unterwurzacher (AUT). The French being with no doubt stronger than her opponent, the title seemed to be her property even before the final started, but Unterwurzacher took her chance and superbly won with yuko obtained on a yoko-sutemi-waza. Not enough precision in her trapping, Agbegnenou could not score and finished at the second place. Read more
