Bekir Ozlu nee Betkil Shukvani was born in Georgia but changed to Turkey in 2015. For Georgia he won European medals U17 and U20 and silver at the Senior European in 2011 in Istanbul. He won the European team title with Georgia in 2007. He won World Cups since 2011 and the Grand Slam of Rio in 2012. Ozlu won gold at the European Open in Minsk in 2017. He captured a bronze medal at the Grand Prix in Zagreb in 2017. Ozlu took gold at the Grand Prix The Hague in 2017.

Orkhan Safarov is the favourite for the European title on Thursday in Kazan. The weight division for men U60kg has a strong field but without Beslan Mudranov the reigning champion. Sarafov has a rather easy draw and French Vincent Limare could be his opponent in the semi final. He will face Ahmet Sahin Kaba of Turkey as first opponent, not an easy start. On the other side of the table Amiran Papinashvili of Georgia is the most experienced, he is in a pool with Ashley McKenzie (GBR) and French talent Walide Khyar. Read more

All of a sudden Damian Szwarnowiecki offered Poland a position to have two men at the Olympic Games. The former double European U23 champion won the Grand Prix in Samsun and last week he was still ranked 66, today he is 31st and 25th in the Olympic ranking. Szwarnowiecki can accompany Maciej Sarnacki in the men’s team for Poland in Rio. In this stage they are the two qualified athletes. With a slight miracle Beta or Zagrodnik can qualify for continental quote, or could Lukasz Blach can be the next man in Rio. Katarzyna Klys and Daria Pogorzelec are the female choices for Poland. Bekir Ozlu takes gold at Judo Grand Prix in Samsun

Turkey celebrated a golden party, guaranteed gold is a luxury that the host nation does not have at many occasions. The final U60kg was an all Turkish final. Only in four previous events Turkey enjoyed two fighters in an international final. Two of those U60kg between the current finallists Bekir Ozlu and Ahmet Sahin Kaba who took the lead halfway the match after he proved to be stronger in the transition to ne-waza and scored a waz-ari. 398 athletes from 68 nations kick-off for the Grand Prix in Samsun on Friday. Of course a big team from Turkey with 52 athletes will compete and the eyecatchers are the women fighting at Day 1 U48kg where Dilara Lokmanhekim and Ebru Sahin will fight for the top positions. Both are potential Olympic participants for Turkey, but only one can go. They are ranked closely, Lokmanheim at 13, Sahin at 14 in the latest Olympic Ranking.
