Russian judoka Kirill Denisov won silver U90kg at the 2015 World Championships and bronze U100kg in 2017. Six times he finished in the top five. Denisov won the European title in 2011, 2013 and the European Games in 2015, he won bronze U100kg in 2017. He won five World Championships medals and finished fifth at the London Olympic Games. In his new weight category U100kg he took quite a few medals. He took silver at the Grand Slam of Ekaterinburg in 2019.

Korea is by far the most successful country winning the Grand Slam title in Tokyo for men. Korean men have captured 11 titles since the first Grand Slam in 2008. Kim SungMin was the most successful wining three editions. Wang Ki-Chun won twice. Still it’s not easy for foreigners to win in the home of judo. Only 16 foreign men won the Grand Slam on Tokyo. Russian talent Niiaz Bilalov made a winning start to his first foray into a Grand Slam final as he beat former world bronze medallist Toma Nikiforov (BEL) to win U100kg gold. Nikiforov, who will take on judo’s heavyweight titans in the Openweight World Championships blockbuster next month, fell behind to a waza-ari score from a drop seoi-nage but thought he had won the contest when he forced a submission on the ground.
