Sergiu Toma won Olympic bronze in Rio 2016. He won the Grand Slam of Abu Dhabi in 2016. He won various World Cup medals, but he started with his biggest victory, the Tournoi de Paris in 2008. He won the Grand Prix in Ulaanbaatar, Abu Dhabi and Qingdao in 2013. In 2005 he was European Junior champion. ECHs finallist in 2011 in Istanbul. Toma won the Grand Prix Tashkent in 2015.

The Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi saw a final U81kg between the two favorites of the category, Canadian silver medallist of the recent World Championships in Chelyabinsk, Antoine VALOIS-FORTIER (CAN) and the 2009 World Champion Ivan Nifontov (RUS). After one minute, Nifontov produced his effort with a powerful and week controlled sumi-gaeshi for waza-ari giving no chance to escape to the Canadian who was immediately immobilized for ippon. Sergiu Toma captures second home victory for UAE

The first final of the day opposed Sergiu Toma (UAE) and Sven Maresch (GER). After only 15 seconds, Toma, strongly supported by the public, engaged a first sumi-gaeshi for waza-ari. The UAE fighter then perfectly controlled the rest of the final to bring a second gold medal to the host country after yesterday's victory in U73kg category. Read more
