Travis Stevens is American top judoka U81kg who won Olympic silver in Rio in 2016. He was fifth at the 2012 London Olympic Games and multiple winner of various IJF event such as Tashkent and Dusseldorf. Travis Stevens won Panam Championships and Panam Games in 2015. He started 2016 with silver in Havana and won the World Masters in Guadalajara.

At the Grand Prix in Dusseldorf in 2015 Travis Stevens throws the Frenchman Alain Schmitt with Uchi-mata ippon. When he wants to get up, Stevens stumbles and looks confused. It looks like a dejavu and perhaps it is, because Russia won its second gold medal this tournament. Khasan Khalmurzaev didn’t have to fight Tchrikishvili or Nagase, but did have a tough list of rivals to overcome, but took the gold medal when he needed it. A surprising tournament for the men’s U81kg category, as expected as the competition is awesome with so many judo stars around. Still most of the usual suspects came up in the quarter finals. We lost some casualties in the prerounds such as Moustopoulos, Bottieau, Lee, De Wit, Pietri and Otgonbaatar and Penalber. Nonetheless Tchrikishvili and Nagase were still lined up for their road to the final with Khalmurzaev surviving keen in the slipstream. Read more
