The Latvian judoka was junior European- and World Champion in 2004 at the age of 17. Jevgenijs Borodavko won bronze medals at the European Championships in 2009, 2011 and 2013. In 2015 he was battling in the final of the Grand Slam of Tyumen. He claimed bronze at the Grand Prix in Tbilisi in 2017. He took bronze at the Grand Prix in Budapest in 2018. Borodavko took bronze at the European Open in Rome in 2019.

European Championships bronze medallist Peter Paltchik (ISR) won his country’s second gold medal in the United Arab Emirates. Paltchik took bronze a year ago under the banner of the IJF but topped the podium today and thanks to the groundbreaking work of the International Judo Federation and the U.A.E Judo & Wrestling Federation, did so with the Israel flag on his judogi and his anthem as he won his first Grand Slam title. Swedish judoka Martin Pacek took Swedish Judo to a new level in Tyumen as he won his country’s first Grand Slam gold medal by beating Tbilisi Grand Prix bronze medallist Jevgenijs Borodavko from Latvia in the U100kg final. World number 27 Borodavko who led 4-2 in their head-to-head record before today, was beaten in their highest profile meeting to date as world number 11 Pacek scored an ouchi-gari with a yuko which was decisive.
