European Cup Celje hosted many former champions

At the European Cup in Celje 25 nations will get together with more than 300 athletes to fight for 56 medals. It’s the eleventh edition of this European Cup in Slovenia, however with the second lowest amount of athletes in 11 years, only in 2015 there were less participants. Slovenian judo booming after success in London and Rio

Looking back at the medal table the two medals of Slovenia shine like a diamond. Tina Trstenjak won the only gold medal for her country so far and with the bronze of Ana Velensek judo dominates the three medals in total for Slovenia. Judo clearly delivered again for Slovenia, the tiny young country with just about 2 million people won its second consecutive judo gold. In 2012 Urska Zolnir achieved the golden mission, now the team of Marjan Fabjan won two medals while also Urska Zolnir impressed as men’s coach with the fifth and surprising place for Adrian Gomboc. Shohei Ono of Japan is the absolute favourite for the Olympic title on 8 August. However, nothing is as it seems at Olympic level. Ono threw Riner at a training camp, but throwing his opponents in Rio may be tougher. In 2012, Russia won a second gold medal thanks to Mansur Isaev. With Isaev being unable to defend his title as he misses the Olympics, it’s about time that Ono takes credit of his reputation. Read more

Rocky Draksic back with golden confidence for Rio

Former European champion Rok Draksic of Slovenia is back to his best judo after following up on his European bronze medal by winning the Budapest Grand Prix. Draksic has had to dig deep to end a mixed run of results by flying back into form in 2016 and former Cluj Napoca European Open silver medallist Dmytro Kanivets (UKR) was conquered in the U73kg final as the Slovenian pinned the Ukrainian down on the tatami for 20 seconds and ippon. Rustam Orujov wins European judo title for Azerbaijan in Kazan

Rustam Orujov of Azerbaijan captured the European title at the European Judo Championships in Kazan. Orujov is only the fourth ever European champion of his country. In 2006, the later Olympic Champion Elnur Mammadli won the first European title U73kg and later in 2011 U81kg. Lightweight Elchin Ismayilov won three titles 200-2005 and Nazim Guseinov set the tone in 1993. Read more
