Mohamed Meridja of Algeria won various international judo medals including twice the Trofeo Guido Sieni in Sassari. He won bronze at the World Military Championships in 1981. After his judo career he became Education director of the IJF and was elected as vice president of the African Judo Union.

At the Congress of the African Judo Union (AJU), Habib Sissoko was elected as President for the next period starting after the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Judo is innovating, with new rules, video support and at the Düsseldorf Grand Prix a chip measured live a number of parameters during the fights. The test was conducted by the PIQ company whose founder, Mr. Ongan Mordeniz, and Fiel Manager, Mr. Thierry Daudier, were present in Düsseldorf. A dozen athletes, including Luxembourg judoka Marie Muller and world champion, Avtandili TCHRIKISHVILI (GEO), were used to trial the technology and authorized the experts to install an electronic chip on their belt.
