Some surprising names in the French selection for Rio. Some nasty decision had to be taken with just one judoka in each weight category. Hardest choices were made in the women’s divisions were in the category U52kg Priscilla Gneto was chosen over Annabelle Euranie. Julia Figueroa give Spaniards Olympic boost

Spanish Julia Figueroa was the overwhelming force in the U48kg category as the Spaniard won all four of her outings to top the podium in Baku. The 25-year-old, who is on course for her first Olympic Games, did not need to compete in the final as her would be opponent Hungarian Csernoviczki Eva was unable to fight due to sustaining a right knee injury in her prior contest. The temperature of the Yasar Dogu Sports Arena raised in the final of the Grand Prix of Samsun U48kg both athletes entered the competition area, the public warmly encouraging Dilara Lokmanhekim and chanting ’Turkiye, Turkiye’. But that was not enough to boost the 21 year old Turkish athlete who was quickly thrown two times, the first one with a sumi-gaeshi for waza-ari, followed a few seconds later by a massive ura-nage (counterattack) for a full ippon. Mongolia superior at first day GP Ulaanbaatar

Mongolia is leading the medal table after the first day of the Judo Grand Prix in Ulaanbaatar. The home country took three gold medals. Most surprising not by the world champion Ganbat Boldbaatar U60kg but Dashdavaa Amartusvhin. Kherlen Ganbold won bronze and they are all of world level. Ganbat is World Ranking leader U60kg, Dashdavaa 8th and Ganbold 14th. Read more

France was the first nation at the Grand Prix of Mongolia to take a gold medal. Three-time European bronze medallist Laetitia Payet forced her way back to the upper echelons of the U48kg category after defeating 18-year-old Asian Championships bronze medallist Kang Yu Jeong (KOR) in the final.
