Sarah Menezes starts well for Brazil with gold in Tyumen

Japan and Brazil topped the medal table at the Grand Slam of Tyumen. One of the contributors to the success was Brazilian Sarah Menezes. The Olympic champion ruled in Tyumen as she dominated Paris Grand Slam winner Yamagishi Emi with an emphatic win which added to her credentials as she aims for her first senior world title. At the Grand Prix of Paris the Japanese women booked two gold medals, one of them was in the lightweight category U48kg. Jeju Grand Prix winner Yamagishi Emi (JPN) was the star performer U48kg as she finished her day by beating world champion Munkhbat Urantsetseg (MGL) to earn gold. Yamagishi stepped away from a ko-soto-gari attempt which left Munkhbat off balance and she slipped to concede a yuko which was all that separated them after four minutes of action. Read more

Ami Kondo confirms her world level at Tokyo Grand Slam

The Grand Slam of Tokyo started well for Japan with a gold medal for lightweight prospect and former cadet world champion Ami Kondo. The youngster moved from being the future of Japanese judo to the present defeating world champion Munkhbat Urantsetseg of Mongolia to win the first gold medal of the day. Kondo burst into action in the final as her willingness to go out and force the action against Munkhbat made light of her youth and the quality of her opponent. Kondo started Japan’s dominance by catching the Mongolian with a foot sweep after two minutes for ippon. Read more
