Marhinde Verkerk is 2009 World Champion and 2015 European Games winner. She ranked 5th at the Olympic Games. Verkerk won silver at the 2013 World Championships in Rio and in 2018 in Baku and in 2015 in Astana she won bronze. She won Grand Slam gold in Abu Dhabi and Grand Prix Tbilisi in 2016. Marhinde took gold at the IJF Masters in St. Petersburg in 2017. Marhinde Verkerk (NED) was number 1 of the IJF World Ranking for seniors U78kg in 2014. She won 30 World Cup medals.

The Dutch team for the World Championships in Budapest includes a little surprise. Triple World Championships runner-up Henk Grol was not very sure how to proceed after the Olympic Games; most likely he would start +100kg. His last matchday was at 11 August 2016 when he couldn’t overcome Cyrille Maret. Now it appears that Grol will make his comeback in Budapest, fighting U100kg. Dutch Guusje Steenhuis showed that she is the present and future for the Netherlands at U78kg as she tamed Rio 2016 pick Marhinde Verkerk. Former world champion Verkerk, 31, who lost in her first contest at the Olympics in Brazil, was thrown with a osoto-makikomi for a waza-ari by the World Judo Masters bronze medallist and was then held down for 20 seconds.
