Japan leads Virtual Medal Table for Rio 2016

The IJF World Tour 2015 is over, time for the awards of the best players, but also time to analyse the current virtual medal table in judo. With the Asian Tour just behind us and the surprising World Championships of Astana, more and more is clear. One thing is for sure: Japan is back. Where in 2012 just one title was captured, now they are in a great shape. Although in 2011 (the previous Olympic cycle) a comparable number of gold medals was achieved by Japan in the World Tour (47 against 53 in 2015). Even at the World Championships in 2011 Japan took 5 gold medals to 6 in 2015. Read more

New levels for IJF with 2015 TV figures

A record number of 193 million viewers worldwide tuned in to television coverage from the World Judo Championships 2015, organised in Astana from August 24-30, 2015. Compared to accumulated television viewership of 110 million for the 2014 World Judo Championships in Chelyabinsk, Russia, the 2015 figures registered an increase of 72% over the corresponding event just one year ago. Vice World champion Kirill Denisov stable judoka at top level

At the World Championships in Astana titled Kirill Denisov added another top level medal to his list of honour, World silver. In a field of 62 judoka, Denisov again managed to finished in the top 5 for the sixth time in a row. At World Championships he reached the final in 2009 and 2015 and won bronze in 2010 and 2013, and was fifth in 2011 and 2014. Ups and downs but always stable which is pleasant for national coach Ezio Gamba. This year Kirill even won the European Games title, his second European title after 2013 and his silver in 2011. Death of Alexandr Jurecka shocks the world of judo

Czech judoka Alexandr Jurecka passed away on Friday evening in Italy. Jurecka was with some friends at the Lake Garda in Italy. According to initial reports from his friends they were diving, what happened while they were in the water it's not clear. Perhaps he became ill during the diving or during the dive out something went wrong. The lake is 80 meters deep and the sight was not clear in the water. Read more

Korean Kim Won Jin takes first place on World Ranking

In the latest release of the IJF World Ranking Korean Kim Won-Jin finally took the leading position U60kg. The current world ranking includes the decreasing to 50% of the points of the European Open in Tallinn in 2014 and to 0% of the points of the Grand Prix in Tashkent in 2013. The top 3 U60kg now consists of Kim, Orkhan Safarov and Yeldos Smetov. It’s the only serious change in the world ranking. The Koreans are doing good business anyway after their glorious World Championships. With 5 judoka in the top 10 and two leading positions compared to four positions in the top 10 and none leading a month ago. In the current top 30 positions, which is likely the limit to qualify in the world ranking Japan have 42 positions. Read more
