It’s been more than a decade since a teenage Marti Malloy, just starting out as a serious judo competitor in Washington state, would set out around the region for judo clinics given by the sport’s most successful American athletes at the time. When world champions Mike Swain or Jimmy Pedro, or fellow Washington native and Olympian Sandra Bacher, were teaching at a clinic or camp, there would be that Malloy kid, soaking up knowledge. Antoine Bouchard had a perfect path that lead straight to the top of the podium Saturday at the Pan American Judo Championship in Edmonton, Alberta. On the second day of competitions, Canadian athletes also won an additional three medals, thanks to stellar performances by Arthur Margelidon, Ecaterina Guica, and Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard – all three of whom will take home bronze medals. For the first time ever, she won against Colombian athlete Yuri Alvear - a three-time World Champion with a waza-ari at the last minute, a great performance. Kelita Zupancic enabled Team Canada to start the Pan American Judo Championships on the right foot Friday, with her gold medal win in Edmonton, Alberta, while teammates Antoine Valois-Fortier and Kyle Reyes both earned bronze medals.
