In the bustling Arena Zagreb, where over 400 judoka gathered for the individual event of the European Judo Championships Senior Zagreb 2024, one athlete's remarkable journey came to a bittersweet close. Telma Monteiro, the Portuguese judoka, graced the tatami for the final time at such a prestigious event, marking her 18th attendance.

Throughout her illustrious career, Monteiro has etched her name in the annals of judo history, amassing an extraordinary collection of accolades. With six gold, two silver, and seven senior European bronze medals, she stands as a paragon of excellence and dedication in European judo.

As Monteiro prepares to embark on her sixth Olympic Games journey, the European Judo Union bestowed upon her the prestigious Best of the Best Award. This honor not only recognizes her remarkable European medal collection but also celebrates her profound contribution to judo in Europe.

Receiving the award was a poignant moment for Monteiro, prompting reflection on her extraordinary career. "I always wanted to make records," she reflects, "it was not spontaneous. I wanted it, I worked for it, and I am really glad that it ended above all expectations: 16 medals, 6 titles."

Monteiro's success, however, was not achieved in isolation. She acknowledges the role of her team and her opponents, crediting them for pushing her to be better. "Every strong opponent made me want to be better," she acknowledges. "Having won 15 European medals, it is truly special."

For Monteiro, the European Championships held a particular significance. "Europeans, for me, was always a special event because to me, European, world, and Olympics are the ones defining your career," she explains. "I always went to the Europeans like it was my last chance, wanting to win a medal."

Indeed, Monteiro's impact extends beyond her medal haul. She has witnessed firsthand the evolution of European judo, from her first European medal in 2004 to the present day. "A lot has changed since my first European medal back in 2004," she observes. "I am really happy to see how much we improved and that I was part of this improvement."

As Monteiro bids farewell to the European Championships, she leaves behind a legacy of excellence and inspiration. From her groundbreaking Olympic bronze in Rio 2016 to her six European titles, she has blazed a trail for future generations of judoka.

Telma Monteiro's name will forever be synonymous with European judo, a testament to her unparalleled skill, unwavering determination, and enduring spirit. As she embarks on her final Olympic Games journey, she does so with the pride of knowing that she has left an indelible mark on the sport she loves.
