Double European champion in 1970 and 1971, Olympic participant in 1972 in Munich Rudolf Hendel passed away at the age of 75 years. Hendel, who found his second home in Frankfurt (Oder) coming from Rodewisch finished seventh at the 1971 World Championships and worked as a trainer, first at ASK Frankfurt (Oder) and later at the federal base until his retirement.

In 1990, together with companions, he founded the judo club 90 Frankfurt (Oder), which achieved brilliant results in the Bundesliga in the first decade of its existence. As club manager of the JC 90, he had a significant share in the success as a multiple German champion and runner-up.

Even as a pensioner, he was always to be found in the sports center and gave a lot of advice to the younger generation in the club. He always had an open ear for the athletes.

He later worked for his club with the same perseverance with which he once fought for the many successes. He became a role model for entire generations of athletes. Rudolf Hendel leaves a big gap in the judo world. He will be sorely missed.
