Amarilis Savón is one of the most experienced participants in Judo. The Cuban phenomenon is the reigning World Champion in the class under 52 kg and has already won two Olympic bronze medals in 1992 and 1996.

Following a disappointing seventh place finish in Sydney, giving birth to a baby girl a year later inspired her to win her first world title in 2003.

Savón is not the only mother amongst the participants who has still been successful after having given birth. Fellow Cuban Driulis Gonzalez gave birth to a boy, Peter, after the Sydney Olympic Games in which Gonzalez came in second. In 2003 she took silver in the World Championship.

Other mothers amongst the participants include France’s Frédérique Jossinet, Germany’s Julia Mattias, and Holland’s Claudia Zwiers.
