Paris to host Olympic Games in 2024, Los Angeles gets 2028

31 Jul 2017 13:10

Los Angeles today agreed to host the 2028 Olympic Games and Paris will stage the Olympic Games of 2024, the IOC announced. It will mark the third time that both Los Angeles and Paris has hosted sport's showpiece event. The French capital played host in 1900 and 1924 and the Olympics took place in Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984. Paris 2024 will have added significance as it will be the centenary of the last time they were staged in the city.

French judo star and eight time world champion Teddy Riner and other top athletes played prominent roles in the campaign.

United States President Donald Trump has been "personally involved" in helping to make Los Angeles' bid a truly American bid. It will be the first time the Summer Olympics have been staged in the US since Atlanta 1996.

IOC counterpart Thomas Bach initially claimed this would not happen as they would already receive the "present" of hosting the Games. Bach who recently visited the IJF Headquarters for a friendly visit to IJF President Marius Vizer, said that both cities had such an outstanding bid that both cities could host the Games, and so it happened.

"The IOC welcomes this decision of the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Bid Committee," said Thomas Bach. "They presented a strong and enthusiastic candidature that embraces the Olympic Agenda 2020 sustainability priorities by incorporating existing facilities and encouraging the engagement of more youth in the Olympic Movement.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has also welcomed the announcement. "Paris and Los Angeles are two amazing global cities that are united in their support of the Olympic cause and we stand together now to help the Games thrive in 2024 and 2028," she said. Judo will be held in the Bercy Arena in 2024.
